Rentals

There’s something about sleeping in a circular space with no corners that is soothing and liberating. That’s why yurt camping and dwelling have become so popular! Renting a yurt is a great way to spend your vacation.

Mongolians have used these round mobile buildings for over 2,500 years, allowing these nomadic folks to follow the good weather. The traditional version has a felt roof and walls covered with skins or canvas for weatherproofing stretched over a wood lattice. Today’s version in the US is more high tech but not all that different in style if the yurts are truly meant to be portable. Yurts range in size from around 12 feet in diameter up to around 35 feet, with a conically shaped roof. Some have a woodstove in the center for heating and cooking.

The original yurt, also called a ger, was made of the materials available to the nomads. Mongolians use yak wool felt, which is woven and shrunken to make the felt, and then oiled to waterproof it. The interiors are often painted with bright decorations.

One of the biggest advantages to a yurt is its performance in extreme weather. Because of the circular floorplan there is no flat wall for an extreme wind gust to catch on. Some yurts have survived winds reaching 100 mph. Chances are you won’t need that type of performance, but isn’t it nice to know it’s there if you need it?

Yurt camping and vacation rentals are great for those who want a different type of vacation. Because yurts are so portable it’s easy enough for yurts to be assembled in some of the more remote off-road areas. Renting a yurt is a great way to reconnect with nature. There are many places now offering yurt rentals to fit various needs.
